INDEXES

The following indexes cover pages 1-253; except in one or two places, and for special reasons, no account is taken of the numbered descriptions beginning on p. 253. Names of authorities, ancient and modern, are not included.
Asterisks are prefixed to a few Greek words that are not to be found in the lexicons of Liddell-Scott-Jones and Sophocles.
By way of excuse for the long list of amulets belonging to the British Museum, I would explain that, with a few exceptions, they are unpublished, and I hoped that the treatment of them in this work, even when there is no more than a mention of the object in connection with others of like character, might be of some slight service when the much-needed catalogue of that remarkable collection comes to be prepared.
Amulets mentioned as belonging to other museums or private collections have been pub-lished in this book or elsewhere, and are not indexed. The footnotes of pp. 1-248 will guide the reader to the published accounts of these objects.
